The neuromuscular disease typically afflicts individuals in their 50's by attacking nerve cells and pathways in the brain causing loss of muscle control and strength. The illness is progressively paralyzing and fatal with most patients dieing within 2-5 years of diagnosis. At any one time there are approximately 30,000 cases in the United States. ALS is indiscriminate affecting people regardless of age, sex or race. There is no cure.
